Mastering legal English

The Intensive English Program

Legal English can be challenging, even for native speakers. Our Intensive English Program is designed to help you master the language and succeed in your LL.M. studies.

The program offers three levels—Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced—culminating in a Legal English course. You will receive comprehensive language training, including classroom vocabulary building and practical experience in actual law school classes.

The LL.M. program director will help you design your program and select courses that match your educational goals.

The program starts each year in August, with orientation dates determined in late spring or early summer.

This depends on the type of visa you obtain, and your immigration status. For example, most LL.M. students in F-1 immigration status may apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to work in a law-related job in the United States for up to one year after graduation. Our Office of International Programs can provide more information, and help you with this process.

An LL.M.. from Washburn makes you eligible to take the bar exam in several states, including New York, California, and Texas. Our LL.M. program director will work with you to explore the available options, and to make sure your program achieves your desired goals.
