The Washburn University School of Law winter intersession course in Barbados provides students an opportunity to understand their legal systems more fully through comparative study of Caribbean and British Commonwealth legal systems, all while living in a safe, stimulating West Indian university environment.

Students have found that the opportunity to study law in the West Indies not only enhances their legal knowledge, but also enables them to develop cross-cultural skills for law practice in a richly diverse Caribbean context. In addition to traditional classroom learning, the program uses site visits to see legal institutions in action. Classroom discussions among U.S. and Caribbean students provide for lively exchanges and new friendships.

Scheduled during the winter break, the program provides flexibility to still complete fall and spring coursework, all while avoiding cold Kansas winters. Financial aid and scholarships are available, and the program welcomes law students from other universities.

Our affordable summer law program in Osaka, Japan offers a unique opportunity to delve into Comparative Constitutional Law. This program brings together students from Japan and around the world, fostering a diverse and enriching academic environment. Japan is one of the United States' most important allies and trade partners. Its constitutional history is deeply linked to American constitutional design but also completely unique in many ways. Living in Osaka, a vibrant and safe city, you’ll experience the blend of modernity and tradition that defines Japanese culture.

The Semester Abroad Exchange Program at Maastricht University in the Netherlands is perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in international and comparative law. Open to Washburn Law students who have completed at least one year of coursework, this program offers the chance to study at a highly regarded European law faculty. Maastricht’s central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Europe. The exchange agreement allows up to four Washburn students to study in Maastricht each year, with reciprocal opportunities for Maastricht students at Washburn.

You'll return with a richer understanding of global legal practices and a unique edge in the competitive legal market.

External study abroad program timeline

Students must follow Washburn Law's external programs process in addition to whatever process is required by the program's host school.

Apply in advance for tentative approval to transfer visiting credit to Washburn Law. First, review the visiting credit policy. The application process then involves submitting an application and program information to the Director of International Legal Programs as well as the Chair of the Curriculum Committee.
If you do not already have a valid U.S. passport, begin the passport application process as soon as possible.
Ensure you understand and have calendared the separate application process to your external, host law school. Coordinate with the host law school's program director if you have questions about travel arrangements, housing, etc.

Begin the Washburn University "Bods Abroad" application and International Programs Scholarship application. The application and modest fee will make you eligible to receive international programs scholarships, receive emergency assistance from the university, and enroll in student travel health insurance.
If you already receive scholarship assistance at Washburn Law, contact our law school Admissions Office for an appointment to determine whether you can use your scholarship to help fund your study abroad.

Complete and submit the internal WU "Bods Abroad" application and International Programs Scholarship application that you began last month. If you miss this deadline, you likely can still apply for the program and for financial aid, but you likely will not be eligible for the International Programs Scholarship. If you do not see your program listed for the main study abroad application, please contact the Director of International Legal Programs to have the program added.

Once your application is approved, it is time to consider whether you wish to apply for financial aid. If you are using financial aid to help fund your study abroad, contact the Washburn University Financial Aid Office to request a financial aid counseling appointment.

If you have not already done so, April 1 is the deadline to complete any forms required in our law school admissions office to allow J.D. program scholarships to be applied to summer studies.
