Community-focused learning

At Washburn Law, we believe that one of the best ways to learn complex principles is through practice. Our community-focused programs offer students an unparalleled opportunity to step into the role of a client advocate, handling real cases for real clients under the close supervision of experienced faculty.

The importance of client experience

Gaining hands-on experience in the Washburn Law Clinic, the VITA program or our Criminal Appellate Advocacy Clinic is a game-changer. Rather than simply observing faculty interactions with clients or acting as an assistant, these programs allow student legal interns to work directly with clients. Through those interactions you'll build skills and confidence while leaving a tangible impact on the lives of community members. These highly valued experiences show prospective employers that—as a Washburn Law grad—you can "hit the ground running" when you start practice as a licensed attorney. On top of it all, you’ll make a real difference, providing assistance to those who might otherwise not have access to help.

Three options to get involved

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Each Spring, Washburn Law, through the Tax and Estate Planning Association student group, offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to families in the community. This opportunity offers invaluable experience for students, particularly those interested in tax law. Providing these services offers a unique opportunity to help individuals with lower incomes, fostering a sense of community service and responsibility. Students gain hands-on experience working directly with clients, enhancing their practical skills and professional development.

Criminal Appellate Advocacy Clinic

The Criminal Appellate Advocacy Clinic offers a unique opportunity to work on felony criminal appeals. Partnering with the Kansas Appellate Defender Office, you'll dive into case records, draft briefs, and sometimes even secure reduced sentences or new trials for clients. In the past, students have handled cases before the Kansas Supreme Court and Kansas Court of Appeals. This clinic is perfect for those with a passion for appellate work and a keen interest in refining their legal writing and research skills.

Washburn Law Clinic

Since its establishment in 1970, the Washburn Law Clinic has been a trailblazer in legal education, providing practical, hands-on experience that prepares students for successful legal careers. With student practice permits issued by the Kansas Supreme Court, students in the Washburn Law Clinic can do everything attorneys do, such as interviewing clients, conducting fact investigation and legal research, advising clients on their options, drafting legal documents, negotiating agreements, and conducting hearings and trials.
