May 2020 Commencement

Due to COVID-19, Washburn University (including the School of Law) has made the difficult decision to cancel the May 2020 commencement ceremonies and events.

We will be exploring opportunities to celebrate our graduating students and their accomplishments in the future.

Washburn University School of Law Commencement is Saturday, May 16, 2020, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Lee Arena of the Petro Allied Health Center on the Washburn Campus.

A New Alumni Reception, hosted by Washburn University School of Law, will be held in Washburn rooms A & B in the Memorial Union immediately following commencement.

Steps for a Successful Graduation

Step 1: BEFORE OCTOBER 31, 2019 - Turn in your Application for Degree (15 KB PDF)

Step 2: BEGINNING MID-OCTOBER 2019 - Sign up for your photo session with Wichers Photography for the Class of 2020 Graduate Composite

  • Composite includes December 2019, May, June, and August 2020 Graduates
  • By appointment only - Sign-up sheets will be available at the entrance of the Law Library.
  • NOVEMBER 4, 5, and 6, 2019 - Have Class of 2020 Graduate Composite Photo Taken
  • There is a session fee of $30.00 plus tax ($32.75) due at your appointment.
  • Each graduate will receive an 11" x 14" print of the composite for this fee.
  • You may pay with cash, check, or debit/credit card. A photo package price list is available.
  • Wichers Photography provides regalia for the photo session.
  • A small amount of your clothing will show under the robe. Look at the previous year's class composite to determine what is appropriate.
  • If you miss the November sessions you must have your picture taken before the end of February to be included on the composite.
    • Contact Wichers Photography at (785) 271-5355 to make an appointment.
    • Wichers is located at 4105 SW 29th Street (just west of Walgreen's at 29th and Gage on the south side of 29th).

Step 3: MARCH 24, 2020 - Order Graduation Announcements (optional)

  • CB Graduation Announcements will be at the law school on March 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Step 4: ON or BEFORE MARCH 25, 2020 - Order Regalia from the Ichabod Shop

  • The Spring GRAD FAIR will be March 25, 2020 in Memorial Union, Washburn Room A/B, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Order regalia and diploma frames at a discount during the GRAD FAIR.
    • The vendors offer a discount that is passed on to you by the Ichabod Shop only during the GRAD FAIR.
  • Cost for regalia ordered before the GRAD FAIR: $79.00 (price is subject to change; discounted during GRAD FAIR).
  • Regalia orders placed after the GRAD FAIR will incur a LATE FEE.
    • Order online at the Ichabod Shop. (a new window will open)
    • Regalia should be available to pick up approximately one week prior to Commencement if ordered by the March 25 deadline.
  • You will receive an email from the Ichabod Shop when your rental regalia (tam, gown, hood, tassel) has arrived.
    • Picked up at the cash register in the Ichabod Shop.
    • Please be prepared to show your ID (Washburn or driver's license).
    • If someone will be picking up regalia for you, please e-mail so this can be noted on the pick-up form.
    • To relax wrinkles in your regalia, please hang it close to the shower. Ironing is not recommended.
    • Tams are one-size. The tams arrive separately from the gown, hood, and tassel package. Please make sure you get all pieces when you pick up your regalia.
  • Regalia should be returned after the ceremony to Memorial Union, Room W (at the end of the hallway outside Wasburn A/B).
    • If you need to keep regalia over the weekend, please contact Rhonda Wedel prior to the ceremony.

Step 5: BEFORE April 15, 2020 - Complete the Graduate Information Questionnaire

Step 6: BY MAY 15, 2020 - Pre-Register for Grad Images Photos (Optional)
  • Individual photos will be taken of each graduate as hooding occurs, as congratulations are extended by Dean Pratt, and in front of the school banner.
  • Register to receive no-obligation commencement photo proofs and a 20% discount if you choose to purchase photos.
  • Questions can be directed to, or call (800) 628-4509, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. eastern time.

Step 7: MAY 15, 2020 - Mandatory Practice

  • Petro Allied Health Center, 10:30-11:00 a.m., Room PC 220
  • Petro Allied Health Center, 11:00-11:30 a.m., Lee Arena

Commencement Day — Saturday, May 16, 2020

Commencement is a celebration to honor and recognize the achievements of all graduates. With respect to all, it is expected that graduates and their families and friends will remain for the entire ceremony. Commencement is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Please make your plans accordingly.

No tickets are required. The event is open to the public.

5:15 p.m.

  • Students arrive to robe in Room 120 of the Law School. Please have a family member or guest keep your personal belongings. A secure location is not available.
  • Guests may want to wait until 5:30 p.m. to drive to Petro. The guests attending the 3:30 p.m. University Commencement will need time to leave the parking area.
  • Faculty and platform party will robe in the Robing/Conference Room and Faculty Reading Room of the Law School. Please do not leave any valuables in these rooms.
  • Assigned faculty and staff will assist with robing and other directions for the ceremony.

5:35-6:00 p.m.

Students come up the back stairway (between Room 119 and Law Journal office) and line up in the second floor faculty hallway. Marshals will assist.

Inclement weather: In case of inclement weather, an announcement will be made on the Law School website, an email will be sent to and signs will be posted on the law school outside doors by 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 16. If inclement weather occurs, graduates will meet in Petro room 125 and faculty will meet in Petro room 220.

6:05 p.m.

The procession leaves the Law School. It includes Grand Marshal Professor Duncan, the Kansas Territorial Pipes and Drums, members of the Washburn University Board of Regents and executive staff, law school deans and faculty, and law school graduates. Other members of the platform party will join the procession at the entrance to Lee Arena.

Families are welcome to stand as "honor guard" along the procession route and take photos/videos. The procession begins by exiting the north side of the law school, heads east to the northeast corner of Memorial Union, turns south then back east and goes past the south side of Morgan Hall, the north side of Carnegie Hall, the north side of Whiting Fieldhouse, and heads south to the southeast entrance to Petro Allied Health Center.

The procession will halt at the first floor northeast entrance to Lee Arena for 5 to 10 minutes, at approximately 6:20 p.m., to allow guests watching the procession to be seated.

Parking is available on the east side of campus close to Lee Arena and on the west side of campus near the law school and Memorial Union where the reception will be held. Disability parking will be in Lot 5, just south of Lee Arena.

6:30 p.m.

Commencement begins with procession into Lee Arena, Petro Allied Health Center.

8:00 p.m.

Approximate end of ceremony.

8:00-10:00 p.m.

A New Alumni Reception, hosted by Washburn University School of Law, will follow Commencement in the Memorial Union Washburn rooms A & B. Hors d'oeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.

Legacy Photos With Relatives

If a relative or relatives who graduated from Washburn Law are attending commencement, Alumni Services would like to take a photograph of you with them prior to commencement. A photographer will be available in the Kansas Room (Law School, 1st floor) from 5:00-5:30 p.m. to take these legacy photos.
