Ideal Place: August 2020 Update

We are extremely excited to share that our dream of creating a state-of-the-art Law School building has moved significantly closer to becoming reality. At a summer 2020 meeting, the Washburn University Board of Regents authorized architects to proceed with the design phase of the project. The architects’ timeline has groundbreaking in late April or early May of 2021.

While the need for a new Washburn Law School home remains essential, legal education has changed dramatically since initial designs and programming efforts were revealed in 2012. Digitization of materials in the law library, online courses in legal education, a projected enrollment of fewer students in law schools nationwide, and a burgeoning Third Year Anywhere™ enrollment option that will take some students out of residence are just a few examples of the changes in legal education since the initial building design. This new environment requires us to update the overall design of the building project resulting in a right-sized technologically sophisticated structure that will meet the innovative needs of our students for years to come. Our new design will exemplify the upward trajectory of our law school and create a state-of-the art cornerstone on Washburn’s campus supporting the interdisciplinary study and expertise that the field of law requires.

The University commitment for the project remains at $20 million, with the balance to be raised by the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation. To date, the Foundation’s Ideal Place fundraising campaign has generated more than $12 million for the project from over 1,200 generous alumni and friends, already the largest amount ever raised for a single project in Washburn’s history. The investments that our generous donors continue to make in the future of Washburn Law have been nothing short of transformational. We will build on this momentum to drive continued fundraising, with an objective to surpass the fundraising goal of $13 million needed for the project. Additional funds raised will be allocated to upgrading the technology in the building to the best available in the marketplace and integrating it into every classroom and conference room rather than the standard technology package that was in the architects’ budget.

Washburn Law has a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and diversity, and we look forward to creating a space that matches the high-quality legal education it provides. We will continue to keep you updated as this project moves forward and look forward to discussing how you might help us make our new home become a reality.

Thank you for all you do to support Washburn Law.
