The costs below are estimates for the 2024-2025 academic year. A typical course of study to obtain the J.D. degree is 90 hours over six semesters/three years. The first year of study consists of 29 hours (14 hours the first semester, 15 hours the second semester).

Qualify for in-state tuition after just 6 months

You can qualify for the Kansas resident rate if you establish residency six months prior to the first day of the first class of the semester. In other words, if you begin living in Kansas by July 1 prior to your first fall semester you can take advantage of in-state tuition when you enroll for the spring semester.

Current Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska residents can attend Washburn Law at resident tuition rates on day one.

And Active duty and veteran military who have received an honorable discharge (shown on DD Form 214), their spouses and dependents also qualify for in-state tuition.

LL.M. tuition and fees

Estimated tuition cost for the 2023-2024 academic year is a flat $33,000. This flat rate provides students with financial certainty. Half of the tuition is charged in a student's first semester and the second half in the second semester.

Unlike some other programs which are based on per credit hour charges, students pay tuition on a flat-rate basis. All LL.M. students must complete 24 credit hours in classroom courses, but may also enroll in a maximum of 6 additional credits during the academic year at no additional tuition cost beyond the required 24 credits.

In addition to tuition, students should plan on the following minimum expenses per academic year (two semesters), estimated by the Washburn University Office of International Programs, while studying at Washburn University School of Law and living in Topeka, Kansas. Students should also consider whether they may need to purchase other items of clothing to be comfortable in Topeka's climate.

M.S.L. tuition and fees

The annual cost for the M.S.L. program varies depending on each student and the number of credit hours they choose to take. To determine your course of study and the corresponding cost of attendance, please reach out to the admissions office.

You may also reference the Washburn University Financial Aid Office for a general cost of attendance (Books through Transportation) for a nine-month period (fall/spring). This is used for calculating financial aid awards, but it may also be helpful for planning out your M.S.L. course of study. See the cost of attendance at the Washburn financial aid website.

The cost per credit hour for M.S.L. students is $573.
