How long will I be expected to volunteer?

The judge in each courtroom will explain the process before each trial begins. Then the trial will take about two and a half hours. The jurors will then deliberate for as long as it takes to come to a verdict. You will be required to spend no longer than 4 hours at the courthouse.

How do I get to the courthouse?

Trials are held at the Shawnee County Courthouse, 200 SE 7th Street, Topeka, Kansas (see map). Parking is available east of the courthouse and at other nearby locations. Enter the courthouse through the east doors and pass through security screening.

How do I find my courtroom?

After you pass through security you will find a welcome table near the elevators. Staff at the table will direct you to the correct courtroom.

Do I need to dress up?

You can dress as casually as you would like.

Will I be asked questions to be seated on a jury panel?

No, you will not. There will be no jury selection phase.

Can I be asked to be assigned to a specific student's trial?

Yes! If you were recruited by an ITAP student who will be an attorney on the day of the trials you can request to be a part of their jury panel. Just contact Donna Vilander at donna.vilander@washburn.edu.
