Military Friendly School Designation Awarded to Washburn University

Logo: Military Friendly SchoolThe designation of a Military Friendly® School was awarded to Washburn University for its strong performance in the areas of Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer), and Loan Default rates, especially for student veterans. The list of Military Friendly® Schools, published by Victory Media, is often referenced by veteran and military families when selecting the best college, university, or trade school for the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

Dean Thomas J. Romig, who capped his 34-year military career by serving for four years as the 36th Judge Advocate General of the Army, has led the charge for Washburn Law to be a strong advocate and supporter of our student veterans as they pursue a career in law.

Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in the Veterans Legal Association of Washburn, a group that provides any Washburn Law student, staff, or faculty member opportunities for involvement with military, veteran, and law enforcement organizations within the scope of legal and law-enforcement careers; provides support and guidance for members, veterans, and their families at the law school; and serves the community by addressing military, veteran, and law-enforcement issues.

Washburn Law also has a long-standing relationship with the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps, which frequently sends guest speakers to the Law School to network with students and present JAG internship and career opportunities.

At Washburn Law’s Veterans Legal Assistance Clinics (VLAC), students ranging from first year to third year offer progressive levels of assistance with wills, estate planning, durable powers of attorney, and expungements of arrests/convictions to service members and veterans. These events provide our students with an opportunity to practice lawyering skills while also delivering the hands-on training needed to practice law and contributing a much-needed community service.

Washburn University is being showcased along with other 2017 Military Friendly® Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly® Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs® and Military Spouse Magazine, and on militaryfriendly.com.
