Tips for Staying Safe

  1. Use Safe Ride for Students (a free Taxi ride home from any of our bars).
  2. Safety Tips:
    • Memorize 1153. Keep the Washburn Police phone number, 785-670-1153, in your cell and in your room.
    • Look up! Don't get so engrossed in text messaging or iPod surfing that you let your guard down.
    • Lock it up. Never leave your room or personal items unattended.
    • Don't walk alone. Use the buddy system to make sure you’re never alone after normal campus hours.
    • Know the people you live with. Never let strangers into the residence halls or apartment complex without proper ID.
    • Plan the safest route. Know the locations of emergency call boxes.
    • Sign up for iAlert! Take responsibility for your safety.
    • Trust your gut. If something seems suspicious, call Washburn Police at 785-670-1153.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Don't take unnecessary risks with personal safety.
    • Play it safe. Obey campus rules and state laws about alcohol and drug use.
  3. Counseling services are available by phone 24/7 at 785-670-3100 (includes a referral to our campus advocate, Molly Steffes-Herman).
  4. Medical services are available in Student Health Services in Morgan Hall (free or at cost to students).
