On Jan. 18, 2019, the Washburn Law Clinic’s new interns were sworn in to practice law in the state of Kansas. Justice Marla Luckert, BA `77 and JD `80, administered the attorney’s oath to the 24 students.

Washburn Law Clinic interns are granted student practice permits through the Kansas Supreme Court, which allows them to represent clients in court.

The Washburn Law Clinic gives students the opportunity to gain experience representing real clients in real cases. This internship helps students apply skills and knowledge gained in the classroom and prepares them to enter into a professional environment.

Each intern is paired with a faculty member who serves as a mentor and supervises them throughout the experience. Students gain experience in different practice areas, including criminal law, family law and immigration, civil litigation, and small business and transactional law.

Co-director of the Washburn Law Clinic John Francis introduced Justice Luckert. Professor Francis explained the importance of students finding balance while practicing law. “You must find healthy outlets that will allow you to have a long career,” he said.

Luckert is a justice on the Kansas Supreme Court and has served on the court since 2003. In her address to the students, she emphasized the significance of being an attorney.

“We are public officers, and you as attorneys all swear to uphold the constitution. This is important,” she said.

Luckert address also focused on the pillars of professionalism, which were inspired by former Chief Justice of Kansas Robert E. Davis. The pillars of professionalism are guidelines that help lawyers ensure their actions are reflecting civility, courtesy, and consideration.

The interns for spring 2019 are Andy Bailey, Rebecca Bergkamp, Scottie Bowden, Timothy Demel, Ashley Franden, Audrey Koehler, Keegan McElroy, Charles Waddle, Charles (Mike) Kerls, William Machado, Katie McAfee, Angelo Panas, Tanner Asbury, Jessica Barranco, Noah Hahs, Jakob Provo, Sydney Dickson, Stephanie Ellis, Sailor Sinclair, Marvin Tador, Elias (Eli) Underwood, and Kennedy White.
