Photograph: Marcos Mendoza.Marcos Mendoza, '89, was hosted by the Business and Transactional Law Center on September 10, 2015. During his all-day visit Mendoza shared his experiences with the students and faculty. He is currently the Assistant Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs for the Texas Association of School Boards. Following law school Mendoza worked for many years at State Farm Insurance. He also earned his LL.M. in Insurance Law at the University of Connecticut.

Mendoza's Lunch and Learn presentation focused on "In-House Practice and Insurance Law." He discussed his views on the rewards and pitfalls of in-house legal positions, and shared his insights on the insurance industry as a legal career. Drawing on his recent five-part series of posts on the Business Law Prof Blog, he discussed the changing landscape of the legal profession, including the new cooperation/competition ("coopetition") between business and law firms. Mendoza provided practical advice for future attorneys about how to choose an employer that is a good fit. He also met with students and faculty members in small groups and over several meals.

Mendoza comes from a family of Washburn Law graduates. His father, Manny Mendoza, '58, was the first Hispanic-American graduate of Washburn Law. He went on to become General Counsel at State Farm Insurance and served on the Board of Governors of the Washburn University School of Law Alumni Association. Mendoza's sister, Lisa Mendoza, '86, currently works at the Kansas Attorney General's Office in Topeka.

The Business and Transactional Law Center is grateful to Mendoza for his very informative and successful visit to Topeka to share his considerable experience with our students and faculty.
