The Washburn University School of Law Professional Development Office co-sponsored with the Topeka Bar Association Government Lawyers Section the First Annual Government Legal Careers Forum on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Sixty-one government representatives attended on behalf of 26 government agencies. Agencies from local, state and federal levels were represented. Approximately 63 students attended the event where they mingled with government representatives and discussed the pros and cons of careers in the government. The program is part of the law school's effort to introduce students to the numerous opportunities available in the public sector for law graduates.

"I couldn't be more pleased with the turnout of government lawyers and students at this inaugural event," said Margann Bennett, Director of Professional Development at Washburn Law. "The feedback we received from both agency participants and students was overwhelmingly positive. Students were able to visit with lawyers representing a wide spectrum of government service, from a municipality to several federal agencies. I'm looking forward to expanding the number of agencies and student participation next year."

Government agencies were invited to send representatives to a free ethics CLE presented by Marty Snyder, Kansas Attorney General's Office, before the Forum. During the Forum, which occurred between 4-6 p.m., students milled between tables staffed by government attorneys.
