Tom Loftus Instructs Students on In-House Corporate Counsel Skills
The Business and Transactional Law Center hosted Tom Loftus '80, as a Distinguished Practitioner in Residence on January 25 and January 26, 2007. Loftus, Senior Counsel to Chevron U.S.A. Inc. in Houston, Texas, met with students and faculty and presented several programs over the two-day period.
In Contracts class and meeting with Small Business and Transactional Law Clinic students Loftus shared techniques he has perfected to design, document, and execute transactions. Students also learned the importance of effective corporate communications to ensure corporate representatives have the information and counsel they need to perform their jobs in an ethical, legal, and professional manner. In a lunch time program co-sponsored by the Professional Development Office Loftus shared his passion for the practice of law as an in-house corporate counsel and discussed employment opportunities in the field. Loftus' presentation "Decision Tree Analysis in Litigation," sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Advocacy, showed the value of using decision trees in planning trial strategy.
Tom Loftus recieved his bachelor's degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, entered service upon graduation, and then attended Washburn. He has worked as in-house corporate counsel for several companies. In addition to his extensive transactional experience, Loftus has been involved in a number of asbestos cases.
