Thomas E. Malone Appointed to Kansas Court of Appeals
On Wednesday, March 12, 2003, Governor Kathleen Sebelius announced the appointment of Judge Thomas E. Malone to the Kansas Court of Appeals. Malone is a 1979 graduate of Washburn University School of Law. Judge Malone's appointment fills a vacancy on the Court created by its expansion from 10 members to 11. With the appointment of Malone, Washburn University School of Law alumni will occupy 5 of the 11 seats on the Kansas Court of Appeals. One additional vacancy remains to be filled from the appointment of Justice Robert L. Gernon, Class of 1969, to the Kansas Supreme Court.
Malone has served since 1991 as a state district judge in the 18th Judicial District. He previously was in private practice in the Wichita firm of Redmond, Redmond & Nazar from 1979 to 1990. In 1992, Malone presided over one of the state's first 'hard 40' criminal cases, and the following year he presided over the first case in Kansas to allow introduction of DNA/PCR evidence. He has served on numerous hearing panels of the Court of Appeals by assignment of the Supreme Court.
Judge Malone serves on the Kansas Judicial Council: Pattern Instructions in Kansas Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Wichita Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association. He has published numerous law journal articles and was an Associate Editor of the Washburn Law Journal from 1978-1979.
