The scholarship, sponsored by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, is designed to assist women from other countries in obtaining advanced degrees from universities in the United States and Canada. The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund was established in 1949 to further the belief that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding. P.E.O. Sisterhood is a philanthropic, educational organization committed to encouraging opportunities for higher education for women.

Ms. Yang's scholarship is the result of efforts by former Dean of the Law School, John Howe, and his wife Marggy. Mrs. Howe is a member of the local chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and contacted Jiyoung to determine her interest in applying for the scholarship. The Howe's assisted Ms. Yang in completing and submitting the application.

Following graduation in May 2002, Ms. Yang hopes to practice international business in the United States to gain experience before returning to Korea.
