Congressman Jim Ryun spoke on March 2, 2001 at Washburn University School of Law. Rep. Ryun touched on a wide range of issues during his presentation. The representative observed that the mandate of the people in the November 2000 elections was to tell elected officials to work together on issues which need attention. He noted the need to strengthen the armed forces of the United States so that a strong military is available to keep peace. Increased pay for members of the all-volunteer military, health care benefits, and improved quality of life are issues which must be addressed.

Rep. Ryun reviewed some of the tax cut proposals currently under consideration. Although debt-free operation is important, only about two trillion dollars of the United States debt can be paid down over the next ten years without incurring early payment penalties. Returning excess tax collections to the taxpayers after other needs are met is important because the money will be spent on additional programs if it remains in Washington, D.C. Rep. Ryun is specifically working to eliminate the marriage penalty because it is unfair, eliminate or minimize the death tax because it hurts small businesses and farmers, and increase the child tax credit.

Congressman Jim Ryun represents the 2nd Congressional District of Kansas and was elected to his third term in November 2000. He sits on the Armed Services, Budget, and Banking Committees.

Congressman Jim Ryun's visit was sponsored by the Christian Legal Society.
