HeinOnline Cataloging Aid
Legal Classics Library
Provider-Neutral MARC Records
Please feel free to direct questions about these changes to Martin Wisneski, martin.wisneski [at] washburn.edu ((785) 670-1788).
Effective October 5, 2009, all records available through this website have been converted to the provider-neutral model. The corresponding records in OCLC have also been updated to the P-N model.
- Some Legal Classics titles appear in more than one HeinOnline library. Corresponding 856s for these other instances have been added to the records (continues previous vendor-specific practice). PLEASE NOTE: If your library does not subscribe to one or more of the following libraries then the corresponding URL in the MARC record will not work. The other HeinOnline libraries include:
- Foreign & International Law Resources Database
- Selden Society Publications
- Taxation & Economic Reform in America
- Treaties and Agreements Library
- U.S. Attorney General Opinions
- U.S. Congressional Documents
- U.S. Federal Legislative History Library
- U.S. Presidential Library
- U.S. Supreme Court Library
- United Nations Law Collection
- World Trials Library
- For the first 100 records only: titles have been searched and researched in OCLC, and when a vendor-specific record was found, a corresponding 856 has been added to the provider-neutral record. Your library may wish to retain or delete these URLs as appropriate. Vendor-specific records involved include:
- Gale's Making of Modern Law
- Google Books
- Archive.org
- Liberty Fund
- Note that OCLC RECORD NUMBERS DID NOT CHANGE. If you download the 'all records' file and import it to your local system you will most likely overwrite existing records with the same OCLC number.
- As part of the provider-neutral conversion, all headings have been reviewed and updated as appropriate.
- Download the file of all records from the HeinOnline Cataloging Aid Legal Classics Library homepage under the "All Legal Classics MARC Records" in the navigation.
The change to provider-neutral is a result of the Provider-Neutral E-Monograph Record Task Group Report (69 KB PDF) recommendations which were implemented August 1, 2009. Effective August 1, records added to OCLC for e-monographs are required to follow the provider-neutral model.
See the following resources for more information:
- Provider-Neutral E-Monograph MARC Record Guide (237 KB PDF)
- Provider-Neutral Cataloging by Becky Culbertson (for the ALCTS Copy Cataloging Interest Group July 11, 2009 and Elluminate session July 23, 2009 (101 KB PowerPoint))
- Task Group charge (33 KB PDF)
- Provider Neutral Records: An Overview by Eugene Dickerson (for TS-SIS/OBS-SIS 2009 AALL Annual Meeting July 27, 2009 program: Taking the Aggravation Out of Aggregators (103 KB PDF))
- Provider-Neutral Records: The Vendor Perspective by Kara Killough (for TS-SIS/OBS-SIS 2009 AALL Annual Meeting July 27, 2009 program: Taking the Aggravation Out of Aggregators (630 KB PDF))
The P-N records will contain very little, if any, vendor-specific information and will focus on recording information that is common among multiple electronic versions. The most significant changes affecting the Legal Classics records are:
- Include 020 (ISBN) when available; note that all ISBNs should be coded in |z.
- Code all Library of Congress call numbers as 050 4 (first indicator blank, second indicator 4).
- Modify 300 (Physical Description) to read '1 online resource' and include pagination in parentheses; exclude 300 |c.
- Exclude 440 (Series Statement/Added Entry–Title) and code instead as 490/8xx.
- Add 500 (Description Based On) note as the first note.
- Exclude the 533 (Electronic Reproduction) note.
- Exclude 539 (Fixed-Length Data Elements of Reproduction) note.
- Provide enhanced 776 (Additional Physical Form) entry that includes |i, |a, |t, |d as applicable.
- Exclude the 830 (Legal classics library (Buffalo, N.Y.)) and 830 (Heinonline.org) Series Added Entry–Uniform Titles.
- Exclude 856 |z (Public Note) text.
- Attempt to include 856 |u for manifestations other than HeinOnline (e.g., Making of Modern Law; archive.org; Google Books).
Provider-Neutral for Vendors
The MARC Record Guide for Monograph Aggregator Vendors, 2nd ed. (2009) (347 KB PDF), is available to vendors and provides guidance for creating provider-neutral records.
Throughout the Vendor guide it is stressed that vendors should include the OCLC control number in each one of their e-records. The hope is that vendors will include the OCLC control number in all their e-records so that eventually it can be used as a match point to minimize duplicate records both in OCLC and in OPACs. If there are no matching OCLC records and the OCLC numbers can be generated only if a vendor uploads its records into OCLC, the issue gets more complicated since it involves the contractual relationship between the vendor and OCLC. Vendors may contact OCLC for more information.
