Professor Monk is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia and the State of New York. He was associated with the firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett of New York City prior to joining the Washburn faculty. He has written in the field of Constitutional Law, with an emphasis on the First Amendment. Professor Monk has lectured on Constitutional Law in Europe, South America and Asia.
Professor Monk chaired the American Bar Association Affirmative Action Committee. He was Dean of Washburn University School of Law from 1978-1988, then served as the Deputy Director of the Association of American Law Schools in Washington, D.C. from 1988 to 1990. He is currently on leave from Washburn serving as Executive Director of the Association of American Law Schools. In this capacity, he has spoken throughout the world on the role of voluntary associations in improving the quality of legal education and the legal profession.
