- Most recently Professor Putt was a visiting professor at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law where he taught property.
- He has served as dean and professor of law at Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University; dean of academic affairs and associate professor of law at Chapman University School of Law; associate professor of law at Cumberland University School of Law; visiting professor at George Washington University; and was a faculty member at Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Education.
- Professor Putt was managing partner for the Birmingham, Ala., firm Smyer, White & Putt, Attorneys at Law, and served as legislative counsel for The Sunbelt Council (a coalition of southern states) in Washington, D.C. After law school, he joined Mitchell, McNutt and Bush, P.C. in Tupelo, Miss., as an associate.
