Shannon Bybee Scholarship Award Writing Competition

Award: 1st and 2nd Place: $2,500 each
SPONSOR: The International Association of Gaming Advisors (IAGA). The award honors the memory of Shannon Bybee, one of the IAGA founders, who had a distinguished career as a gaming attorney, state gaming regulator, gaming industry executive and pioneering educator in casino operations and gaming law. TOPICS: Research paper intended to enhance the understanding of gaming law or the recommendation of a beneficial change in gaming law. ELIGIBILITY: (1) All submissions must be part of the student's class work at an accredited law school during the 2008-2009 school year. (2) Submission must be accompanied by written confirmation from a law school instructor that the paper was written under the direction of that instructor. FORMAT: The papers may be of any length, but it is recommended they be between 3,000 and 5,000 words, exclusive of footnoting. CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION: (1) quality of presentation; (2) quality of footnoting; (3) depth of research; (4) novelty or importance of subject matter; (5) value to gaming law practitioners or gaming control officials; and, (6) value to the study of gaming law. James E. Beckley Securities Arbitration and Law Writing Competition

SPONSOR: The Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association "PIABA". James E. Beckley was well known for defending and promoting the rights of public investors. Along with his advocacy skills, he was a prolific and outstanding writer. Mr. Beckley served on the Securities Industry Conference on Arbitration, an organization created at the request of the Securities and Exchange Commission to maintain and update the Uniform Code of Arbitration for securities arbitration, and to serve as a sounding board on issues of fairness in arbitration. At the time of his death in 1999, Mr. Beckley was the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association ("PIABA") President. This competition has been established to honor his legacy. THE PURPOSE: The purpose of the competition is to promote greater interest in and understanding of the fields of securities arbitration and securities law and to encourage excellent legal writing skills in law students. TOPIC: The submission my address any aspect of Securities law; Securities arbitration; The Federal Arbitration Act, Title 9, US Code, Section 1-14; or FINRA Code of Arbitration, effective April 16, 2007 and any changes or proposed changes to that Code. The writing can be based in theory or practice, but should ultimately advocate a position on the topic area chosen. ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all students who attend a law school in the United States. FORMAT: (1) The text of the submission must be double-spaced, with 12-point font and 1 inch margins; (2) Any Question(s) Presented section, the Statement of the Facts / Statement of the Law section, the Argument section, and/or the Conclusion, together are limited to 20 pages; (3) If the submission covers both a topic among those listed above and a topic not listed above, only the topic listed above will be evaluated; (4) Submissions will not be penalized for arguing a position that would limit investor rights rather than expand them.
