Social Work Interdisciplinary Program

To effectively meet their clients' needs, lawyers must frequently work with professionals from other disciplines. Mental health providers and social workers are among those with whom attorneys commonly work. The Law Clinic recently began an interdisciplinary program with Washburn University's School of Social Work in which a graduate level social work student conducts a clinical field placement in the Law Clinic. The social work intern can provide clients with referrals to mental health services and substance abuse counseling, conduct home assessments and provide other important social services. The availability of the social work intern permits Law Clinic students to work collaboratively with professionals from outside the legal field to assist clients in gaining access to much needed resources. Such services can be a tremendous asset in counseling clients and advocating on their behalf.
