Patrick Turner, Fall 2007 Intern, Reflects on Clinic Experience
By Patrick Turner

Patrick Turner graduated in December 2007 and sat for the February 2008 bar. He is employed by the Adams Jones Law Firm in Wichita, Kansas. While in Clinic, Patrick was named as the co-recipient of the Irvine E. Ungerman Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice for the Summer/Fall 2007 semester.
The Washburn Law Clinic provides law students with the invaluable opportunity of gaining real-world experience under the guidance of practicing attorneys. As part of my real-world experience, I represented an individual charged with DUI and other traffic offenses. With the help of Professor John Francis, I was able to eventually try this case in court and obtain a favorable outcome for my client.
At first, I was a bit apprehensive about the entire litigation process. The Clinic professors and staff, however, were very helpful and ensured that I had the resources and instruction needed to properly develop the case. This support structure virtually eliminated my anxiety. It was also comforting to know that I was not solely on my own to figure out everything. Professor Francis walked me through each step in developing the case - client interviewing and counseling, discovery, plea negotiation, motion practice, and trial preparation - but he was careful to avoid micromanaging. We devised a trial strategy that, ultimately, convinced the court to rule in my client's favor.
The knowledge and practical skills I have obtained through the Clinic will definitely enhance my future practice as an attorney. Even though my current career plans do not include substantial litigation, this experience has provided me with the confidence of knowing that I have the ability to properly represent a client and can perform professionally in court. I highly recommend that every student participate in the Washburn Law Clinic.
