Judge Nancy L. Caplinger Presides Over Swearing-In Ceremony
On January 22, 2008, twenty-seven law students took an oath, administered by Kansas Court of Appeals Judge Nancy L. Caplinger, to support the constitutions of the United States and of the State of Kansas and to faithfully perform the duties of legal intern while enrolled in the Washburn Law Clinic. These students also swore they have read and will abide by the rules relating to the discipline of Kansas attorneys and all the rules stated in Kansas Supreme Court Rule 709. Upon taking the oath, the law students became legal interns held to the same professional and ethical standards as seasoned practicing attorneys.
In her comments before administering the oath, Judge Caplinger shared her insight with the Clinic students. During this time, Judge Caplinger confessed she regretted not enrolling in Clinic when she was a law student at Washburn. Judge Caplinger commended the interns on their courage to want to practice law before graduating from law school and explained how the Clinic professors "have your back" while you are practicing in Clinic.
Judge Caplinger also reminded the interns their legal reputation starts now and how they handle themselves and interact with others will be remembered well into their careers. Although still interns, the Judge advised that their level of professionalism is being judged.
Judge Nancy L. Caplinger graduated from Washburn Law School in 1985 and has been on the Court of Appeals since 2004.
