Criminal Appeal Advocacy
In this course students write and file two appellate briefs on behalf of Kansas Appellate Defender Office clients, under the supervision of Randall Hodgkinson, a KADO attorney. Students who qualify as legal interns under Kansas Supreme Court Rule 709 may sign the briefs, although such certification is not a prerequisite for the course. The course includes a seminar consisting of lectures and exercises dealing with a variety of aspects of criminal appellate defense. The prerequisites for this course are Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure I, Evidence, and Professional Responsibility. If you are interested in enrolling in this course, please speak with Professor Hodgkinson regarding process.
"Criminal Appeal Advocacy is great because it gives you real world experience that prepares you for summer jobs and for legal practice after graduation. I learned how to spot issues for appeal and how to effectively advocate for a client to an appellate court. This experience came in handy last summer during my internship at a district attorney's office. The interns were each asked to write a response to an appeal, and the foundation I learned from taking this class made that a much easier project."
