Kari Miller Earns Ungerman Award

Photograph: Kari Miller. Kari Miller carried on the tradition of excellent student work while she was a legal intern in the Spring of 2004. She was responsible for three cases: an annulment for an older, disabled woman, a divorce for a young woman with a seriously ill child, and the defense of a complicated divorce for an older woman whose retired veteran husband wanted to deprive her of almost all their property, including the home in which she lived with their 18 year old high school daughter. Kari handled all of these matters professionally and promptly, but the last case provided her an opportunity to demonstrate outstanding lawyering skills.

Kari mastered the numerous facts and legal issues involved in this divorce, discovery, negotiations, a pretrial conference, and a trial of the case, in which she obtained excellent results for the client. She proved to be a self starter who figured out what needed to be done before asking for supervisory approval. She was thorough, prompt, patient and considerate of the client, wrote excellent pleadings and letters, and was an effective oral advocate. Kari joins a long list of deserving Ungerman award recipients.

Kari graduated in May 2004 and became a member of the bar when she was sworn-in in September.

The Irvine E. Ungerman Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice is awarded twice during an academic year. One or two recipients are chosen for the Summer/Fall semesters and for the Spring semester.
