Laura Lewis Receives Ungerman Award

Photograph: Laura Lewis.Laura Lewis was an outstanding legal intern, handling all her cases with deep concern for and undstanding of her clients, prompt, efficient action on their behalf, and effective advocacy. She dealt with some difficult clients and opposing parties with admirable patience and courtesy. Laura also excelled with outstanding research skills and the ability to explain matters clearly to clients in writing. She demonstrated the highest skills and values of advocacy while practicing in the Law Clinic.

Laura represented an immigrant from Japan who was seeking a divorce from the husband who had deserted her, advising the client about how the divorce would impact her visa and how she should proceed. Another client’s husband was seeking to force a divorce on the unwilling client, right after the husband discovered he had terminal cancer. There were many issues involving veterans benefits and property division upon which the client needed and received excellent advice. Laura also handled a contested custody case, obtaining a temporary child support order after a contested hearing.

After graduating in December of 2003, Laura accepted a position with the firm of Leslie A. Hess in Dodge City, Kansas. Laura and her son, Tristin, live in Meade, Kansas.
