Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court
The Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court emphasises excellence in litigation, lawyering, and legal ethics to improve the skills, professionalism and ethics of the bench and bar. Members become more effective advocates and counselors with a keener ethical awareness, and have the opportunity to learn side-by-side with the most experienced judges and attorneys in the community.
The membership is divided into eight 'pupillage teams,' with each team consisting of a few members from each of the membership categories described below. Each pupillage team conducts a substantive demonstration concerning some aspect of litigation during one of the eight Inn meetings each year. Meetings typically include dinner, the demonstration, and a question and answer session or critique by the other members.
The Sam A. Crow Inn consists of 75 active members, divided into four categories:
- Masters (state and federal judges, attorneys, and law professors with more than 15 years experience);
- Barristers (attorneys with at least 5 years of litigation experience);
- Associates (new lawyers with 0-5 years experience);
- Pupils (third-year law students, with preference given to those who have emphasized trial advocacy courses, Law Clinic, Moot Court, etc.).
The Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court accepts applications in the late spring or early fall each year. A contribution to the Washburn Law School Foundation by United States District Judge Sam Crow covers costs for Pupils.
For more information, contact Professor James M. Concannon or see the national American Inns of Court web site. Application forms are available from Donna Vilander in the Continuing Legal Education Office, Room 331.
