Centers For Excellence & Special Programs
Washburn Law's tradition of excellence in teaching is enhanced by its three Centers for Excellence:
- The Business and Transactional Law Center provides students with many innovative opportunities to expand their knowledge on business law subjects while developing the essential skills of the transactional lawyer. Center programming is designed to assist students in effectively applying their legal knowledge to accomplish specific client goals.
- The Children and Family Law Center prepare lawyers who can address the vexing problems that arise in the fields of children and family law and is a collaborative effort involving Washburn Law students, alumni, and faculty.
- The Center for Excellence in Advocacy prepares law students and lawyers to be effective advocates by training them in the persuasive and skilled use of advocacy techniques.
Washburn's certificate programs allow students to specialize in a field of study while at the same time obtain a traditional legal education.
The Washburn Law Clinic provides students with the opportunity to represent real clients and provide a full range of legal services including interviewing and counseling, legal research, case planning, fact investigation, negotiation or mediation, document drafting, and trial of the case. Students appear in the municipal, state and federal courts in Shawnee County, in the state and federal appellate courts, and in state and federal administrative agency hearings.
The Washburn Law Externship Program enhances legal education through off-campus placements. Externships provide students the opportunity to learn through hands-on experience and assume the role of a professional in training. Students handle real issues and work on real assignments while impacting the lives of the people involved.
Washburn Law's Pro Bono Program is designed to provide all students with an opportunity to experience firsthand the importance of maintaining connections with the greater community. Although the study and practice of law can be rigorous and challenging, both are enhanced when one becomes aware of the needs of others through volunteer work.
The Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court brings together judges, attorneys, law school faculty and third-year law students to foster excellence in professionalism, ethics, civility, and legal skills in order to perfect the quality, availability and efficiency of justice in the United States.
In Washburn's Summer Study Abroad Program, Washburn faculty and other international scholars teach two courses which have a comparative law focus. Offered at the University of Utrecht in The Netherlands, courses vary each summer.
Recognizing that legal and business studies complement each other and that real-world problems often require solutions from both legal and business perspectives, Washburn University has developed a dual degree program to encourage students to obtain J.D. and M.B.A. degrees during their course of study at Washburn.
