Hands-On Experience In and Out of the Classroom
Winning Legacy in Advocacy Competitions
Upper-level students compete in trial and academic appellate advocacy competitions, client counseling competitions, and moot court events across the country.
Externship Placement
Students earn academic credit and valuable advocacy experience through placement in the externship program. Students work under the supervision of lawyers in government agencies, corporations and other organizations.
Clinical Experience
The Washburn Law Clinic offers five distinct practice concentrations – in family, juvenile, criminal, civil, and tribal law. Clinic interns represent real clients in real cases. Third-year law students, eligible through the clinic, receive a special license to practice law from the Kansas Supreme Court. They handle their cases under the close guidance of faculty members who are experienced practicing lawyers.
Cutting Edge Techno-Advocacy
In addition to specialized coursework, students sharpen their advocacy skills using the Robinson Courtroom and Bianchino Technology Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to prepare students for real-world courtroom practice. They are trained to use the latest technology in their courtroom presentations to create memorable exhibits, and organize trial presentations using computer software. Students gain the skills they need to be successful advocates – whether they go on to practice in the courtroom or the boardroom.
