When the Kansas Supreme Court authorized senior law students to practice law under supervision, the school responded by establishing the Law Clinic in 1970. The "student law firm" was able to provide legal aid to the community while providing practical experience for students. Enrollment continued to grow and in 1977 there were 229 first year students registered for class. In 1979, Dean Raymond Spring returned to teaching and Carl Monk, a member of the faculty, was named dean. Dean Monk was determined to improve the law school. He reduced the size of the first year class to no more than 150 students. It ensured Washburn Law would have one of the best student-teacher ratios in the nation. Under Dean Monk's tenure, the school received national recognition for its professional development program. |
