Centennial Celebration

Thru the Years: 1923-1933

Harry K. Allen had been appointed dean in 1922 and would hold the position longer than any other Dean - 14 ½ years. He made great progress during his tenure. He reopened the summer session and helped greatly expand the law library. "Modern-day courses" included the groundbreaking field of Criminology - Dr. Karl Menninger became part of the faculty, bringing modern science into the classroom. In 1923, the American Bar Association included Washburn University School of Law in its first list of accredited law schools.

Wanting to stand apart from the other students on campus, seniors at the law school began carrying canes in October of 1923 and would continue the practice for decades. There was a feeling of camaraderie as students and faculty worked together on professional development. Women continued to enroll in law school although their doing so was the subject of many debates.
