Letter From The Dean

Photograph: Thomas Romig.I hope you will be able to join us for our third biennial United States Supreme Court admissions ceremony. This is a very special event which I think you will find to be one of the highlights of your legal career. I would be honored to move your admission to the Court on Monday, April 28, 2008.

We have planned a memorable Washburn weekend in our nation's capital for all of you joining us. We have reserved a block of rooms at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill Hotel for Friday through Monday. We will have a reception on Sunday evening that will include Washington area alumni. On the day of the ceremony, we will offer a continental breakfast for our group at the Supreme Court. Following the swearing-in ceremony, we will have a luncheon at the historic Army and Navy Club where the guest speaker will be William K. Suter, Clerk of the United States Supreme Court. After the luncheon we have planned a tour of the Pentagon for those interested.

I encourage all of you to consider spending the weekend with us. In addition to the swearing-in ceremony, this will be a tremendous opportunity to spend time with fellow alumni and to see Washington, D.C.

I look forward to hosting you and your family and friends in our nation's capital.

Sincerely,
Thomas J. Romig
Dean, Washburn University School of Law

Join Washburn University School of Law for its third alumni group to be admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. Washburn Law alumni from around the world, who are eligible for admission to the bar of the Supreme Court, will be sworn in at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008. You will stand before the nine justices of the court, an event you will consider one of the highlights of your legal career. Sharing this opportunity with other Washburn Law alumni makes this an exceptionally unique event.

Requirements for Admission

To qualify for admission to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, an applicant must have been admitted to practice in the highest court of a State, Commonwealth, Territory or Possession, or the District of Columbia for a period of at least three years immediately before the date of application; must not have been the subject of any adverse disciplinary action pronounced or in affect during that 3-year period; and must appear to the Court to be of good moral and professional character.

Necessary forms for admission are located on the Supreme Court web site.

Complete the admissions form and send it to the alumni office at the law school along with your Certificate of Good Standing (see Bar Admissions Instructions at the Supreme Court web site). You need two (2) signatures for sponsors who are already sworn into the United States Supreme Court. If you do not know two people who have been sworn in, Washburn Law will supply the signatures needed for the statement of sponsors on your admission form. Washburn Law will file all of your necessary paperwork, with admission fees, to the Supreme Court. Admission fee is $200.

Due to the size of the court, only 50 spaces are available and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the law school alumni office at (785) 670-1011 to reserve your spot. Due to the court size and their space constraints, each person being admitted to the court can bring one (1) guest into the Supreme Court to witness the swearing-in. If there is room, additional guests could possibly be allowed in, but it is at the discretion of the Court and is not guaranteed. Children under age 8 are not admitted into the courtroom for the ceremony.

Planned Events

Several events are planned for the swearing-in. If you do not plan on being sworn in, please join us in Washington, D.C. for the other scheduled events.
