Upper-Level Curriculum

Upper-Level Requirements

Certificate Programs

You have the opportunity to distinguish yourself in the job market by earning a Certificate of Concentration at Washburn Law in one of these areas.

Washburn Law prides itself on the strength of its curriculum. Washburn Law provides not only the opportunity to study a broad range of subjects, but also the opportunity to study them in detail. Beyond the upper-level requirements, you are encouraged to select a study program that meets your individual interests. Many students select electives that introduce them to a broad range of subjects. Others add an element of concentration by participating in one of the school's certificate programs. Students who have specialized interests may also design independent study programs or explore academic options by participating in the activities of the school's signature programs in advocacy, business and transactional law, or children and family law.

These areas of concentration can be completed within the traditional 90 credit hours required for graduation. Students do not declare majors because law school provides a broad foundational education. This program, however, formalizes an area of concentration within the traditional law school curriculum.

International Programs

Currently, Washburn Law expands students' understanding of different legal systems through its summer program at Utrecht University and its semester-long program at Maastricht University, both in the Netherlands. In 2009, second- and third-year students will have the opportunity to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, to study at the University of the Western Cape.

Summer Abroad — University of Utrecht

Our program uses a comparative model and takes advantage of co-teaching by Utrecht University and Washburn Law professors in addition to enrolling law students from the University of Utrecht. Students may earn six hours of academic credit. Specific courses vary from year to year. The curriculum utilizes both traditional classroom methods and field trips to observe relevant legal institutions in action. Utrecht is located 20 miles southeast of Amsterdam.

Independent Study Abroad — University of Maastricht

The Independent Study Abroad Program allows Washburn Law students who have completed one year of course work to study international law and comparative law for a full semester with the faculty of law at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. The program exposes students to the socio-legal environment of the Netherlands and Europe.
