Our Faculty
The hallmark of the Washburn University School of Law faculty is the broad legal education it collectively provides to students. The diversity of faculty education, teaching experience, and perspective ensures that students receive a broad view of the law through intense intellectual experiences and exposure to current legal issues. Drawing upon the experiences of selected practicing lawyers and sitting judges, our adjunct faculty members bring additional practical insights and specialized experiences to classes.
Nationally Recognized Scholars
Our faculty includes prominent scholars in all aspects of law who share their knowledge through the publication of books, journal articles, and reference book entries and through presentations to national and international organizations. Professors bring the knowledge resulting from their research and studies to the classrooms, making certain that course content remains current. Students collaborate with the faculty, providing research assistance and becoming involved in the preparation of new publications. Examples of scholarship include two leading casebooks co-authored by our faculty members, one in the field of family law and the other in the field of oil and gas law. Law professors throughout the nation use both casebooks. One of our faculty members has authored a leading reference text in the field of constitutional law while another professor recently published a book titled A Theory of Universal Democracy and the follow-up, A Theory of International Terrorism: Understanding Islamic Militancy.
Dedicated Public Servants
Washburn Law faculty members recognize the need for true professionals to contribute to the growth of their profession and to the betterment of society. They meet their professional obligation to serve in numerous ways. One faculty member serves as a tribal judge for the Iowa Indian Nation. Another professor leads the efforts to establish equal rights for gays, lesbians, transsexuals, and bisexuals.
Our library director chairs the Technology Committee of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, and other professors provide pro bono representation for low-income clients on educational issues and divorce matters.
Master Teachers
The core strength of our faculty is teaching. Our faculty members have a long history of working together to pioneer new programs, to develop teaching innovations, and to attend to the needs of our students. One of our faculty members is a nationally recognized expert on law school teaching and law student learning. He frequently presents at national teaching and learning conferences, regularly leads teaching workshops, and has helped develop successful educational programs at other law schools. He also has authored two books designed to help students succeed in law school, on the bar exam, and in law practice, both of which have been adopted at multiple law schools.
